As a health coach, I have given this advice countless times..."do something that scares you," or "step out of your comfort zone." Yadda, yadda, yadda. I certainly didn't create this idea, nor is it very original. We have all heard famous quotes about this topic.
"Do something that scares you every day. Those small things that make us uncomfortable help us build courage to do the work we do." - Eleanor Roosevelt
Or
"Don't let fear make your decisions for you."- Annette White
Or
"You can choose courage or you can choose comfort. You cannot have both." -Brene Brown
Or
"If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you."- Anonymous
I could go on.
Here's the thing; there is truth in this advice. By stepping out of your comfort zone, you grow; you learn; you become more willing to try more things. New things lead to more experiences and more opportunities. And ultimately, it can lead to more enjoyment!
Despite dishing out this advice, I have let fear hold me back. I am far from an introvert. Yet, something about creating a web-based blog has terrified me for years. Ironically, I have published wellness tips in a weekly newsletter for six years. So, clearly, I have something to say! Yet, since it was for the wellness program I work for, and I've been sharing tips with my amazing teammates, it felt safer. Having a site (and a voice) that is solely mine, feels awkwardly different. It's even a little scary.
However, my true passion in life is to help others enhance their wellness. It feels like my purpose, my calling. Nothing makes me happier than to see others feel better and embrace happier, healthier lifestyles. This platform helps me reach even more people. Why wouldn't I do it? What was holding me back? In short, it was me.
So, here I am, taking my own advice.
Now it's your turn. What do you want to try but have been too fearful to do so? Ask yourself, what's the worst that can happen? What's truly holding you back? Start small and do something out of your comfort zone. Once you achieve that step, take another step forward. Before long, you will realize that you had it in you all along. The other option is to jump into it straight away. Whatever style fits you best, wholeheartedly go after it, and don't let fear stop you from achieving your goals.
We've got this!
