If you are looking for a pristine paradise, check out Audra State Park.  Nestled in Buckhannon, West Virginia, this 355-acre park is the perfect blend of tranquility and adventure.

During a recent weekend hike, Lily and I made a pit stop at Audra State Park on our way to Seneca Rocks. We were instantly captivated by the crystal-clear turquoise water when we arrived.  The brilliant color of the river is caused by fresh, clean water and the fine limestone particles, which reflect sunlight and result in a stunning greenish-blue hue.  At times, it had a brilliant aqua tone, too, as the sun peaked in and out behind the clouds.  We spent some time along the riverbank soaking in the sunshine and the peaceful sound of the flowing water.  There's even a beach-like area where visitors can wade into the river and splash around. It was a bit too chilly for us to dip in this time, but you can bet I'll be back this summer!

Surprisingly, the crystal-clear water isn’t even the park’s most unique feature. Audra is best known for its Alum Cave Trail, which is a 2.7-mile loop that’s rated moderate, though I’d personally put it on the easier side. Initially created in 1906 as a tram road to transport logs to a nearby sawmill, the trail now offers a peaceful hike among the river and trees.

The wooded trail was mostly smooth, with occasional uneven terrain due to rocks and roots.  It was dry during our visit but could become fairly muddy if it’s raining.  According to AllTrails, the total elevation gain is 328 ft.

As we approached Alum Cave from the upper section of the trail, a steep staircase led us down beneath the rock. Not long after, the dirt path transitioned into a wooden boardwalk that winds along the edge of a towering rock face tucked beneath a massive overhang.

While it’s not technically a cave, the space definitely gives off a cavern-like vibe. It’s a great view of the rocks, but the absolute showstopper is the view of the flowing river below.

Listening to the cascading water below while standing among the towering rock walls was truly awe-inspiring. The combination of the rushing water and massive stone created an invigorating and peaceful feeling. While energetic calm is an oxymoron, I can't think of a better way to describe that moment. Either way, it was a unique and memorable experience and one we won't soon forget.

HELPFUL TIDBITS

  • This park is absolutely FREE to visit!  That's a big win for folks from out of state who are used to paying entrance fees.

  • It's pet-friendly for anyone who wants to experience it with their furry best friend.

  • The bathrooms near the picnic area were surprisingly super clean.  Of course, if you spend a lot of time on trails, you know that even a flushable toilet can feel like a luxury. For those who don't mind the basics, a few port-a-potties are also available in the parking area.

  • Just past the picnic area, a swing set and a tall metal slide are tucked away among the trees.  The hidden playground is a fun surprise for kids and "kids-at-heart."

  • Camping is available. In total, there are 65 campsites.

  • Audra is just over an hour's drive to the Seneca Rocks Trail, our second destination for the day.  With a bit of planning, you can easily enjoy both hikes in one adventure-packed day!
